    Dactylorhiza praetermissa (Southern Marsh Orchid) The offer is forfive flowering size MATURE tubers of Dactylorhiza praetermissa (Southern Marsh Orchid). D praetermissa can be quite variable but the clone offered is from a clump of more than100 offsets producing rich magenta flower spikes with exquisite flower markings when viewed close up. The stems are thick and strong and can reach 30 inches in height. This orchid is fully hardy in the UK and tolerant of a wide range of soils. It may be planted in the ground or in a pot. In the long term soil planted dactylorhiza left undisturbed do better because the roots are able to develop symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi. The microscopic seeds need this fungi for successful germination if propagated naturally. Although called marsh orchids, dactylorhizas are NOT bog plants and will not tolerate water-logged soils. The ‘secret’ to success is to give good drainage but never allow the soil to dry out. They enjoy an open aspect with plenty of light and ventilation where they will naturalise well if not disturbed. They do not grow well under glass. Dactylorhizas never go completely dormant. The tuber will be sent bare-rooted but wrapped loosely in damp peat to prevent desiccation. Plant without delay with the growing tip just below the soil or compost surface. It should flower next June but may need a season to settle and produce new offsets. These plants has been selected from a clump grown in my own garden and NOT taken from the wild. Pictures taken 2008 in my garden.
