Rooted in 4″ squares, these liners are very well established. The photo here shows a typical 18-24″ tree compared to an 8-12″ starter plug. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery, especially in times of inclement national weather or during times of high seasonal volume, i.e. Christmas, spring planting season, etc. I usually try to get them out the Monday or Tuesday after payment is confirmed. The plants will be shipped via FedEx Home delivery. A tracking number can either be emailed or telephoned upon request. You should have them by that Thursday or Friday. The plants are generally in transit 2-6 days and delivery is usually left without a signature. Although there is no guarantee to the productiveness of your stock after you recieve them, your purchase will positively be refunded or exchanged if you do not recieve the plants in timely fashion by the courier. Sorry! Cannot ship to AZ, OR, WA, CA or internationally. 1. Upon receiving your trees, first open the box and examine the moisture content. Liners and #7 gallon (4′-4 1/2′) are shipped in the pot. Remove, standuprightand water. All other sizes are shipped bare root*.Moisture shouldbevisible through the bag. DONOT remove the trees from the bags until you are ready to plant.DO NOTstore them in direct sunlight. I have kept them in the bags for almost two weeks. With proper care, they have excelled and are now ingrounds on my property that produce many cuttings each year for propagation. I take great care in wrapping the roots. However, small tears in the bags can occur during shipping or be overlooked during packing. If the roots are dry, simply add a small amount of water (1/2 cup) to the bag where it is tied. 2. Prepare the landscape.Trees in a row should be 8 to 10 feet apart. Rows should be 6 to 8 feet apart and staggered. This is the recommended format for the fastest coverage. Many peopleplanttrees in a rowcloser together in an effort to forcea quicker hedge. This will work in years1 through 6. After that, the trees will begin to grow into each other. This will stunt further growth and result in an unkempt, crowded appearance. Remember, these trees grow quickly. Think ten years down the road when they are 20-25 feet tall and 8 feet wide at the base. Another very important part of the landscape is water. You must be willing to water your trees at least every other day for about 6 weeks. The Leyland cypress is toutedto be drought tolerant. This is true, but only for older, moreestablished trees.Newly planted trees are enduring transplantshock and shipping stress. To not water them consistently in their first few weeks is a death sentence. Be careful not to over water. They like moist soil, not sopping wet. About 1/2 gallon per day or every other day is a good rule of thumb. If it rains…you get the day off. 3. Prepare the holes. These trees can grow in a wide variety of soil types ranging from the pure Forida sand here on the farm to solid Georgia red clay to the rocky clay found in the Midatlantic and New England states. The size of the hole is somewhat important. Dig a hole about 3 times the size of the root ball. For the #7 gallon (4′-4 1/2′) dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Compost mix, humus, or regular topsoil mix is recommended to make the backfill. Either in the hole or in a wheel barrel mix 1/2 native soil to 1/2compost, humus, or topsoil. Plant so the top of the root ball is level with the ground. DO NOTheap the dirt up around the stem. This can cause rot, and it should be level. Before planting the tree to the hole, I recommend removing the bottom three sets of basal leaves. These are the small branches at the bottom of the tree and just above the root ball. They are a waste of energy and a breeding ground for fungus. Continue filling in the hole with the backfill mixture and tamping down the soil. 4. Stake, fertilize, and water. Stakes arerecommended for all new plants. Even if theyseem to be solid and standing upright, a good windy day can blow them over, or a hard rain can blast theloose backfill out. DO NOTusegarden or grass fertilizers. These are designed for a very sudden uptake of nitrogen which will result in “burning”. Instead, use a granular time-release called osmocote. Many companies produce this. They are usually yellow or grey granules about the size of a BB and last for 4 to 12 months. You can find it at Walmart, Lowes, or HomeDepot. It isabout $20.00-$25.00 per 5 pound container. I also use another time release called milorganite. This is much weaker butless expensive (about $10.00 per 50 pound bag). I generally use this in the spring or after drought for a quick “green-up”. Sprinkle about 1/2 cup around the base of your newly planted trees. Recommended also is root stimulator. Mulch is optional, but recommended for a number of factors. It aids in weed prevention, helpsmaintain even moisture, housesthe time release fertilizer, andconcentrates and funnels water directly to the root ball. Once planted, water your trees. Pruning is NOT recommended for at least 6-8 weeks. Once they are established, they can be groomed twice per season (spring and late summer)for a thicker, more shapely look. After that, the treeswill grow naturally. Good luck and if you still have questions please call me at 352-528-4597. Sean A. Aucker
