Its delicate compound leaves which have lance shaped leaflets are held on multiple non-branching stems. The whole plant has a very lacy appearance and upright form, growing 6-8 feet and 2-4’ wide on bright yellow wood. The new growth is often bronze to rose in color, becoming green with age. In the fall and winter, the growth takes on autumn leaf colors: red, orange, bronze and pink. In spring, large 8-12 inch clusters of attractive small white flowers emerge at the end of stems followed by green berries which ripen to beautiful bright red that are held for many months, providing winter interest. The bright berries are beloved by birds and attract mockingbirds, cedar waxwings, and robins. Unlike most plants we call ‘bamboo’ Nandina is not a nuisance plant. Actually, it’s not even a bamboo at all, but a member of the barberry family. It is commonly called Heavenly Bamboo because its erect, cane-like stems and compound leaves resemble bamboo. One advantage of Nandina is that it does not send underground sprouts all over the garden like bamboo does. The stems emerge right from the base of the plants. This is one of the toughest and most adaptable of plants to a variety of conditions. Some specimens are known to have lived for more than 100 years. Heavenly Bamboo can be used in virtually any part of the landscape. It is especially useful in full or part sun, where the foliage color is superb. However, it will even grow in a shady part of the garden. Of course, the leaf color is not nearly as vibrant and it does not flower as well. Heavenly Bamboo is a very popular plant in Japanese gardens, because of its leaf texture and color. In the Japanese home garden this plant will often be found near the front or back door, as they consider it the ‘friendship plant’. If the plant can be used in the garden near night lights, it will cast a beautiful silhouette. The plant has added value in that it provides cut branches for use in floral arrangements. Other Names: Heavenly Bamboo Zone: 5 to 9 Growth rate: Moderate Plant Type: This shrub is evergreen in the warm winter climates of Zones 8-10 and becomes deciduous as soon as winter temperatures dip below 10 F., with the stems sometimes dying to the ground. Family: Berberidaceae Native Range: India to JapanHeight: 3 to 8feetSpread: 2 to 4feetShape: Unbranched upright canes Bloom Time: June Bloom Color: White with yellow anthersFlower/Fruit: 8-12 inch clusters of small white flowers followed by bright red berries Sun: Full sun to part shade Fall Color: Red, orange, bronze and pink Drought tolerance: Water: MediumMaintenance: Medium Site Requirements/ Soil tolerances: Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates a wide range of soils, but prefers moist humus ones. Does not thrive in sand. Best fruiting occurs when grown in groups. Single specimens may fruit poorly. Culture: Generally the plant remains quite compact. If needed, the taller stems can be pruned to lower the height of the plants. Pruning can be done at any time throughout the year. The cut stems are very popular to use in flower arranging and will last for several days. Uses: Plant form, foliage, fall color, spring flowers and fruit make this an interesting ornamental for the landscape. Group or mass for best effect. Shrub borders or open woodland gardens.
