    PinkDorothy Perkinsclimbing rose antique heirloom Offered for sale is one pinkclimbing Dorothy Perkins rose bush grown on its own roots. This is the old rose which used to be common, particularly in rural areas of the South. Plant offered for saleis at least two years old with well-developed roots. Canes will be pruned to about 12 to 15 inches for shipping unless they are pliable enough to bend inside a shipping container. Plant will be shipped bare-root without soil and wrapped in moist packing material. The photo accompanying this ad is of my parent plant in full bloom. The plant which you will receive will be a smaller dormant plant with some leaves but no blooms. Dorothy Perkins rose blooms in May. It is a once-bloomer. Ithas clusters offlowers about an inch across growing on slender stems. It is lightly fragrant. Foliage is small and shiny. Green canes are fast-growing and may spread 15 feet or more, covering a fence or trellis. This plant is also suitable for covering a roadbank. When canes are allowed to trail along the ground, the have a tendency to take root where the tips touch the ground, forming new plants. While my plants are rooted by layering, this variety is also easily rooted from cuttings. This is a hardy variety which withstands drought, neglect and damage from browsing animals such as deer. Clumps of these have survived grazing cattle at a family homestad for more than 40 years. This rose grows well in Zones 8 and 9. I have no experience with its growth habit in a colder climate. As stated earlier, I ship bare-root roses, which means they are dug out of the ground and have most of the soil removed. I do this in an effort to reduce the shipping weight and the price of postage.
