3 cuttings Cherokee rose Offered forsaleare three fresh, healthy UNROOTED cuttings of Cherokee rose. Cuttings will be approximately eight inches long and at least the diameter of a No. 2 pencil. These are bare canes.Cuttings will be taken from the growing canes immediately before being packaged indamp paper, boxed and shipped. Cherokee rose is best suited for Zones 8-10. It is a hotclimate plant. It may be damaged by temperatures below 15 degrees F. This climbing antique species rose at maturity produces large, five-petal white flowers with prominent yellow stamens.Blooms may be as large as four inches in diameter. Stems are short. Canes have numerous large, hooked thorns. Large canes can reach 20 or more feet. Cherokee rose blooms once per season. Mature plants will be covered with a sea of white roses in early spring. In Zone 9 where I grow them, Cherokee buds appear in late March or early April. Bloom time usually lasts three to four weeks. Its glossy leaves are evergreen. After plants are established, they require no care to thrive. They are disease-resistant. They tolerate drought, neglect and poor soil. Canes are fast-growing. Vigorous pruning is recommended unless the intent is to create a screen or barrier. Cherokee rose is well suited for creating a living barrier wall. It can be trained into a living fence capable of repelling livestock. Without support, the free-standing plants may reach more than eight feet in height and a spread of 10 or more feet. Cherkee rose will climb a tree or cover a fence. Cherokee rose is not suited for small spaces or for placement close to paths or walks. It grows large, and the hooked thorns snag anything which bushes past the rose bush. Cherokee rose originated in China. It was introduced in the United States in the 1800s. Because the Cherokee is easy to root and tolerates drought and neglect, it grows wild in some areas of the Southeast. It is the state flower of Georgia. Cherokee rose is an easy rose to root. During cool weather when soil is moist, bare canes simply stuck a few inches into the ground can take root. Fence rows may be lined by simply punching the canes into the wet ground in early spring. To create a more favorable environment for rooting your cuttings, you may wish to prepare holes about six inches deep and six inches to a foot in diameter. Mix sand and rich organic matter with some of the dirt removed from the hole. It is not necessary to use rooting powder to successfully root cuttings. However, dipping an inch or so of the bottom end of the cutting into rooting powder may promote root growth. Tap off excess rooting powder, then gently set the cane upright into the prepared hole. Fill in soil around the cutting andfirm the soil, leaving about three inches of the cane above ground. Water enough to moisten the soil. Water periodically to keep soil moist while the cuttingsare rooting, but don’t make the ground soggy. It may take several months before leaves start to grow, and a season of growth for roots to become established. If you choose to root your cuttings in pots, it is essential that the soil remain moist, but not wet. Wind and sun dry out the soil quickly. Place potted cuttings in a shelter area with shade during part of the day. Plenty of cuttings are available if you need more to plant a fence row or some other large project. An order of threecuttings will be shipped via First Class Mail. If additional cuttings are purchased, package weight may require me to switch to Priority Mail. Payment is expected within three days of purchase.
