Genus: Prunus Species: americana Common Name: American Plum Other Name: August Plum, Hog Plum, Wild Plum Pre-treatment: required Zone Hardiness Cold: 3 Zone Hardiness warm: 8 Plant Type: Large Shrub / Small Tree Growth rate: medium Vegetation type: deciduous Germination rate: very high Leaf /Flower color: green/white DESCRIPTION: Introducing spring to woodlands of North America with white flower-lined branches in early spring, wild plum also yields edible yellow and red fruits that are enjoyed by humans and wildlife alike. A small rounded to irregular deciduous tree native to a huge portion of central North America, it is relatively slow growing but will quickly form a thicket colony. In early spring, as the leaves emerge, small clusters of cup-shaped, fragrant white flowers line the dark brown twigged branches. Pollinated by bees, the flowers will become small golf ball sized fruits that are ripe by midsummer in shades or yellow or red. The leaves are oval and have small teeth on their edges, being satiny glossed and mid to dark green. In autumn the leaves turn shades of yellow-green, yellow and gold with occasional flashes of orange. The brown-gray bark is cracked and furrowed and branches are often riddled with small twig spurs that act like prickly thorns, becoming painful as you try to walk through a stand of these trees. Grow wild plum in full sun to partial shade in a wide range of soil pHs and textures. Growth is faster and more invasive in rich, moist, deep soils in full sun exposures. It makes a low maintenance naturalized buffer planting in meadows or on woodland edges. If grown in a garden setting much effort is required to ensure suckering plants from the roots do not invade and take over the bed. For this reason alone, it is best left to grow without constant pruning and unnecessary manipulation.
