ThisisBambusa Tuldoides Ventricosa (considered the “Little Buddha Belly”). Ventricosa bamboo develops swolleninternodesand often “staggers” asit grows (Also called a ZIGZAG CULM).Willsometimes produce more profoundbellies when stressed, when grown in containers, etc.,although i have alsowitnessed unstressed plants produce bellies and zigzags! Not always a predictable plant.
A WONDERFUL ARCHING BAMBOO
This plant can be grown it into a dense hedge to give a window more privacy. It can also be grown as a tall shade plant to give your porchmore shade. I’ve grown this plant to block the street lights at nightfrom tall poles around my house.I’ve also grown this plant to arching canopyover my driveway. You can even bonsai it if you want! I’ve had plenty of my own experiments with this plant and i’m always amazed at howforgivingit is to such a wide array of growing conditions.

Scientific Name: Bambusa Tuldoides ‘Ventricosa’
Common Name:Little Buddha Belly
MAX Height Range: When left alone inground 55ft
Rhizome: Pachymorph (CLUMPER)
MAX Culm Diameter: 2 1/2 inches (Some believe this plant only gets 2 1/4″ thick, but i have seen many culms swell larger than this).
MINTemperature: 15 F (if colder, bring indoors. Might drop leaves innear freezingweather.) All bamboo produces a natural antifreeze within its culm walls.
Light: Full Direct Sun w/some shade if growing in Tropical/HOT zones. If indoors, brightest window, or a few hours on the porch each day. Very adaptive plant.
Water: Drought resistent to a point. Water or mist when leaves begin to curl. Allow potted plants to dry out before watering for best effects. It will tell you when it needs watering. Misting during times of high-heat is suggested for potted plants.
Feeding: Heavy feeders, loves Nitrogen & slightly acidic soil. I prefer liquid fertilizers and regular foliar feeding.
Origin: Native to Southern China.
Uses: Ornamental & Landscaping. Tall hedge, Window cover, Screen, Windbreak, Dwarf Indoor/Outdoor Potted Plant, Bonsai. Edible shoots reportedly taste EXCELLENT, although i have never tried it.
HardinessZones: Native to Tropical Regions, it will thrive in zones 8-11, although if cared for and maintainedit will thrive just about anywhere.
Notes: Produces shortened, swollen and staggering (zigzag)internodes and dwarfs itselfwhen pruned, stressed, potted, and/or water deprived.Somewhat resembles Bambusa Vulgaris ‘Wamin’, which is known as the “Large Buddha Belly” (larger culm width). Do not confuse this plant with Bambusa Tuldoides, which does not produce bellies but instead grows rather conventionally. This is Bambusa Tuldoides ‘Ventricosa’.

How tall is a 1 gallon plant?
My plants vary greatly in size, mostly because they are very fast growers. There is really no standard and a plant with a 1 gallon sized rootball could be either 12 inches tall, or 5 feet tall. In order to keep the plants shipable, expect your plant to be no taller than 24 inches regardless of what size rootball you order, unless the listing describes otherwise. The benefits of a larger rootball are many, including a faster, shorter time needed to acclimate to their new environment, a faster, quicker growth spurt after repotting, and more.
I dont like the plant that i ordered. Its not what i thought it would look like. Can i return it for a refund?

My plant arrived damaged through the mail and i didn’t pay for insurance… What do i do?
Pay for insurance whenever you purchase something online. You are responsible for paying to have your package insured. If it is insured i will work with you to recover the provable value of the item from the postal service/fed ex. If you do not pay for insurance you are taking a risk. Uninsured items will not be protected against this risk. With all that being said, most plants will recover and it might not be worth all the hassle to recover funds throughan insurance claim (which often takes months to resolve).
What is a Field-dug plant?
A field-dug plant is one that has been growing in the ground for quite some time. It is not growing in a container and this means mostly that the plant itself has not been stunted, but allowed to grow out. The main thing to remember when purchasing a field-dug plant is that it is in the ground at the time of your purchase. It is not dug up out of the ground until you have paid for it. It is then root trimmed (if necessary) and topped (if necessary) to fit in the restrictions of a shipping box. Field-dug plants, when dug properly by someone who knows what they are doing, are no better or worse than container-ized plants. Both will adapt to their new enviroment. Typically field-dug bamboo respond quicker, in my opinion, than container-ized plants when replanted or potted up. By being exposed to the sudden stress (and wake-up call!) of being dug, topped and clipped, this usually triggers the plant to put out new shoots and replace what has been taken away rather quickly.
