Z. dynamite ’starburst’ x dynamo ’splashes’ just happened to produce one of the best alba varieties we have. The expected outcome was a bit different then what they turned out like but we’re not complaining as it turned out gorgeous. Fantastic scent as well, very heavy vanilla like fragrance. This is an absolute must for your collection! This orchid is an established seedling and is between 3 and 6 inches tall CARE Lighting: Although they can handle brighter light we grow them in 80% shade. If the spot you have in mind for this gorgeous plant is quite a lot brighter please don’t just drop it into the intense light. Give it time to adjust. I recommend moving it into a brighter spot a little bit at a time. Maybe over a period of two weeks or so. Temperature: In general a temperature range of 10 degrees celsius is about as cool as I would dare to go for most Zygopetalum and I would be hesitant to allow the plant to get much warmer than 28 degrees for extended periods of time. All the Zygopetalum we grow thrive in these conditions but you may find that they can do equally well outside of this range. Watering: Zygopetalum can be watered overhead and don’t like to sit in water for any period of time. Zygopetalum also tend to like to dry out for a slight bit between watering. When they are actively growing we water within a day or two of the medium drying out. When they are “restingâ€ such as in the winter we water less and let them sit for a bit before watering and then water lightly. Although they can enjoy misting, Zygopetalum are very susceptible to black spot fungus and you probably should avoid it, especially in very hot or cold, humid conditions. Both of which favor fungal growth. Humidity: Zygopetalum can tolerate a broad range of humidity. They will do quite well in a range between 65% -80%. Again at higher humidity be very careful not to allow the leaves to sit damp for any extended length of time. If you are planning to grow this in your home which like most homes is probably quite dry the problem of humidity can be solved by placing a tray of pebbles under the pot and keeping them damp (It can look quite attractive as well especially if you add some live sphagnum moss for a decorative effect). Soil: Zygopetalum will tolerate a wide variety of mediums as long as they are free draining, hold a lot of water and are nearly completely free of minerals and salts. Pure long fibered sphagnum moss is a great one although a little pricey. Another good recipe is one part each of perlite, long fibred sphagnum moss or coarse sphagnum peat moss, horticultural charcoal and five parts fine grade orchid bark, all of which are available at most garden centers. Fertilizing: Fertilizing is something that is greatly debated amongst growers. There are some that recommend fertilizing with a high nitrogen fertilizer when they are actively growing and then using a high phosphorus fertilizer at the end of the season for blooming. Others like to use a well rounded fertilizer through out the year. There is also the question of using organic or inorganic fertilizers. One thing that tends to be agreed upon is to feed them “weakly, weeklyâ€. As for us we feed all our orchids with a well rounded fertilizer at a rate of about 100 ppm of each nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium with each watering, making sure that the water flows amply out the bottom of the pot to ensure there is no salt build up. We have found most modern research tends to favour using a well rounded fertilizer and we don’t find it surprising as orchid have an amazing ability to store nutrients and water to use when needed. It makes even more sense to use a well rounded fertilizer when growing in bark as it steels a lot of nitrogen as it decays. SHIPPING We take great care shipping our plants. We have pampered them for so long it seems a very big waste if they were to die on route. They are barerooted to avoid damaging the roots and then placed in a plastic bag or wrapped (depending on the season). Shipped like this they will last weeks. Combine shipping for multiple items and save money, additional plants are just $2.50 each. US and international customers there is a $12 fee included in the above shipping rate. This fee covers the necessary phytosanitary and cites inspection and papers that are required to ship plants outside of canada. Note this fee is per shipment not per plant so if you are interested in more than one plant just let us know so we can ship them together so you don’t have to pay this fee more than you have to. Generally the inspector comes by once a week and plants are shipped immediately after but unfortunately we are at the mercy of their schedule. It is rare that they cannot come once a week but there may be delays around busy times of the year such as christmas and holidays.
