    Hairy Basil – Maang Lak (Thailand). USES MEDICINAL: Seed mucilage has been used as a tonic. Has been used as a cold remedy in India. A decoction has been used for chest problems and for dysentery. HOMEOPATHIC: Used for diseases of the kidney, bladder and urethra, uric acid diathesis, swelling of glands (inguinal and mammary), and renal colic. DOSE = 6th to 30th potency. CULINARY: Mild young leaves used in rice and curry dishes. Used to season seafood, meats, poultry stuffing, salads, soups, and sauces. SEASONING RECIPE = Combine 1 oz each of nutmeg, mace and dried bay leaves; 2 oz. each of cloves, peppercorns and winter savoury; 3 oz each of basil, marjoram, and thyme; 1/2 oz each of cayenne and grated lemon peel; 2 tsp of granulated garlic. Powder all and store in air tight bottle. OTHER: The distilled oil has a lemon to camphor odour varying at either end of the spectrum which is used to fragrance soaps and other toilet products. How to grow: Basil can be planted directly into the ground from seed. Find a well-drained spot where daytime temperatures reach at least 20 degrees C. They like to stay above 16 degrees C at night. Be sure to plant after all danger of frost is past. They are very tender, especially at the early stages of growth. Try not to over water to avoid problems with root rot (damping off). At the University of North Carolina “a light sand to silt loam with a pH of 6.4″ is recommended. Young plants may also be scorched by the sun. A bit of protection from the searing heat at noon-time would not go amiss. Pinching off leaves frequently will promote bushiness. Harvesting is recommended before the plant flowers. Many people think that waiting after flowering causes the leaves to take on a bitter taste. In point of fact, the flowers themselves are edible, but most people do not find them as tasty as the young leaves. Postage: 49p from Thailand. Buy 2 or 3 packets and pay for postage on just 1.
