    Polypodium glycyrrhiza, LICORICE FERN One of the most common and easily distinguished ferns native to the Pacific Northwest. It’s habitat is moist, mossy locations on cliffs, trunks of trees, logs, occasionally in drier sites. Its range is along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California and eastward to South Dakota, New Mexico and Arizona. Evergreen in moist areas; the fronds often wither during dry periods in mid-summer, putting forth new fronds with the beginning of fall wet periods. The fronds vary in size from 6 to 18 inches in length and 1 to 3 inches in width. In general outline they taper from the widest point near, or at, the lower pair of pinnae to a narrow tip. Spores are borne in sori that are round, large and conspicuous, on the underside. The rhizome has a creeping habit and a distinct licorice taste - hence the common name. Licorice fern was used by generations for its medicinal properties. Licorice fern is found on calcium rich soils and on the calcium rich bark of Acer macrophyllum (Big Leaf Maple), It also grows on many other trees, such as Apple and Alder, it doesn’t grow on conifers. To establish your fern on a tree, drape it over the branch and secure with twine or some other fastener that will rot away before girdling the branch, placing the fern in the crotch of a branch may hold it securely enough to get it established. Misting the fern frequently during hot periods will keep it green all year. Picking an area that is already mossy will ensure it is a suitable location for the fern and give it something to root into easily. To establish your fern on the ground place the fern on bark or other woody material, like a tree stump and keep shaded and moist. May be established on shady rocks and walls also. May also be grown in a bark based soil mix, be sure to keep well watered for continual growth. ZONE 7, can easily withstand 10F freezes once established. 1rhizome shipped bare-root with moss.
