One bucket of loose assorted Aquatic plants, easy to grow in a small container or pond of fertile water to provide nutritious munchies for captive turtles. - Maximise the value of a small parcel, picked fresh, direct from the grower! ~ The aquatic plants in this listing have all been tried and tested A1 tasty number one munchies with Snapping turtles, yellow bellied sliders, Eastern mud, Spotted and Painted turtles These are easy to grow hardy plants which thrive easy indoors through Winter in well lit frost free conditions, ready to provide a steady supply of tid bits and hiding places for your indoor wintered aquatic turtle A bucket sized portion of loose plants will be collected and compressed gently to fit into a standard size Priority parcel packed with as much Anacharis, tubers and trimmed rooted aquatic plants (described below) that can be fitted in. These have grown in a quiet corner of a semi shaded Carolina pond through hard freezing winters and hot Summer waters in the 80’s (°f) Postage price: Three to four pounds weight, usps Priority estimated to your Zipcode Turtle Munchies: Anacharis, Frogbit, Arrowhead, Water Poppy, Plantain, Duckweed Anacharis (Egeria densa) The plants picked will usually be 9″ to 18″ strands, intact and rooted pieces will be found where possible. As a pond plant Hardy to zone 5, Anacharis is a fast growing perennial native of warm and temperate parts of America, Anacharis masses up to form dense submerged foliage which can make lengths up to six feet long where it has space to spread. There is one surprising extra feature, when this humble plant puts up a host of delicate tiny white flowers just above the water surface, late Summer… Quite effective for creating cover for fish through the Winter months, for collecting spawn for transfer, for beating algae early in the year when it masses up toward the end of Summer, round up large foliage masses and gather them in the quiet dull corners of the pond so it does not shade or smother water lilies dormant submerse foliage through Winter 5 Frogbit This auction includes 5 sections of frogbit, a distinctive floating plant looking rather like a tiny white flowering waterlily with feathery long roots, rather an attractive sight when it masses up in a small pond. The round pale green floating leaves have a quite thick spongy shape The plant reproduces by making stolens horizontally from which new plants emerge, as Winter approaches ‘turions’ or buds form which drift to the pond bottom overwinter to start up next Spring With its brittle edible foliage being popular with a range of aquatic critters such as snails and turtles it’s not a bad idea to set some aside in an isolation tub before starting to introduce it to a community pond position 5 Arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia) Supplied as arrowhead tubers through Winter… Growing to 18″ tall, Arrowhead overwinters as starchy tubers that drift about the pond, nicknamed ‘duck potatoes’. As it grows to form the distinctive shape of arrowhead leaves, these grace many a wild native corner with their brittle foliage. Later in Summer, delicate three petalled white flowers are produced in groups of three. Growing in too deep a position, exotic strap like leaves develop underwater creating a quite marine effect. Pot up arrowhead tubers in plain clay or loam soil, and place in up to six inches water depth. Large turtles enjoy snipping at the stems and roots and reducing this plant to stumps, pecking away at the carnage of the foliage remnants, best planted separate from a turtle pond so the mature foliage can be snipped to provide tid bits. In the event arrowhead tubers are not available in the Winter months, a handfull of Frogbit will be substituted 5 Water Poppy (Hydrocleys nymphoides) This auction includes five sections of well rooted plant with well developed leaves, wrapped moist and bagged to seal in a little moisture to keep it fresh. Growing best in 6″ depth of water, to 15″ maximum growing depth. Making round pretty paddle shaped like leaves much like frogbit, that float on the water surface like a lily, 2″ to 4″ in size on stems that may be 3′ long…. Quite attractive as an aquarium plant or pond plant This is a pretty scrambling plant of shallow waters, much like water fringe, romping around with runners scooting along the pond bottom, setting root where it can. Poppy like yellow flowers emerge in mid summer about 2″ in size with a red and brown inner detail, lasting but a day but are continuously produced through Summer. Water poppy can be kept outside in Southern states where freezes are not prolonged… Outside of tropical climates, water poppy can be kept indoors in Winter in a sunny window with bright light to supplement daylight as well as in well lit aquariums To start this plant, use a small pot with ordinary soil, pin the rooted section with a twig or pebble so it can set root, place in 6″ deep water. Once settled, it will soon be sending shoots scooting out of the pot, to form a mass of flowering foliage. A bit of a rascal, this plant, it will trot about…. however its roots are quite basic and easy to control Water Plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) Attractive foliage and stunning flower panicles. This quite hardy aquatic is easy to grow in deep or shallow water when potted. Over time this plant is capable of masses of foliage to spare to feed to captive turtles. Pot up in a six inch pot with plain clay or loam soil, and place in up to six inches water depth. The plant supplied will be a well established well rooted plant that is currently dormant, pot up and see it burst into life indoors in well lit frost free conditions, to sprout plenty of foliage which turtles of all ages find as tasty as waterlily stems. Large turtles enjoy snipping at the stems and reducing the stems and roots to stumps, pecking away at the carnage of the foliage remnants (best planted separate from a turtle pond so the mature foliage can be snipped to provide tid bits) Starter Portion, Greater Duckweed (Lemna Polyrhizza) and Duckweed (Lemna minor) A quite plain free floating plant, however it is a popular tid bit for feeding turtles, koi and goldfish. What will be sent is about half a cup measure of duckweed, sufficient to start off a colony in a fertile isolation tub to keep your critters in ’salad tidbits’ through the Summer as it grows to provide surpluses The supply of this item can be variable through the year, intense rain storms here sometimes wash the duckweeds down the River Neuse periodically. It is possible a substitution may need to be arranged at short notice Please note: Among the Anacharis are likely to be sprigs of bladderwort, the odd water lily seedling, frog bit, four leafed clover (marsilea) duckweed and possibly azolla, these plants tend to grow quite happy in the same pond niche. Don’t be surprised to find a few small crustaceans such as snails, freshwater mussels and tadpoles hitching a ride… Please note, as with all other descriptions, these plants are grown in ponds with no fish present, in waters routinely treated to ensure no nasties such as water lily crown rot are likely to turn up unexpectedly.
