Picked and packed fresh, direct from the grower! A trio of submerged aquatics well suited to algae beating • Anacharis, Hornwort PLUS Cabomba, perhaps the most versatile of submerged aquatic plants • Easy to keep • Widely tolerant of light and temperature range • Growing between 60°f to 90°f • Thriving in neutral to slightly alkaline waters • Very well suited to coldwater aquaria • Versatile as a pond plant Postage: USPS Priority, 2-3 pounds weight calculated within the USA Intact and rooted pieces will be found where possible, nearly a 3 gallon size bucket size quantity of loose plants, compressed and packed to make the most of a standard size USPS Priority parcel box, making a two to three pound parcel weight Anacharis (Egeria densa) The plants picked will mainly be 2′ to 4′ strands. Effective as an algae buster, soaking up nutrients early in the year, this submerged aquatic plant variety has coped with severe winters under ice and 100°f Summers in the Carolina’s, the only thing that slows it down is a complete drought in a baking hot pond, even then it can recover from roots embedded in the mud… While it can live up to its name Anacharis, ‘anarchy’… what roots it makes are quite easy to yank out, unlike Elodea which has a tunneling habit that can riddle a waterlily pot, smothering favourite plants early in the year As an aquarium plant~ At a ph between 6ph and 8ph, lighting of two watts per gallon (5-7000k full spectrum) 60°f to 80°f should see it thrive well, pin sections to the aquarium sand or gravel to encourage roots to form to anchor the foliage or try it free floating. Anacharis is quite effective placed to the sides or back of the aquarium to form an attractive mass of foliage, trim excess growth to create new bold groups where fish can choose to hide, to lay eggs, to shelter baby fish. In warm aquariums, Anacharis may need some additional plant feed to keep it growing perky. As a pond plant Hardy to zone 5, Anacharis is a fast growing perennial native of warm and temperate parts of America, Anacharis masses up to form dense submerged foliage which can make lengths up to six feet long where it has space to spread. There is one surprising extra feature, when this humble plant puts up a host of delicate tiny white flowers just above the water surface, late Summer… Quite effective for creating cover for fish through the Winter months, for collecting spawn for transfer, for beating algae early in the year when it masses up toward the end of Summer, round up large foliage masses and gather them in the quiet dull corners of the pond so it does not shade or smother water lilies dormant submerse foliage through Winter Listed as an invasive plant in AL, CT, ME, NH, OR, SC, VT, WA., please do not consider starting this plant where it is considered invasive, passing birds and critters can spread sprigs to sensitive habitats which cannot cope with smothering by this fast growing species. Surplus plants make an excellent mulch around drought sensitive garden plants, effectively extracting surplus fertility from ponds that would otherwise stimulate algae such as blanketweed Submerged Aquatic ‘Coontail’, Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) This time of year is quite good to move coontails, when numbers have built up and done their ‘algae’ beating task, Hornwort excretes substances toxic to algae (allelopathic behaviour) and at good growth conditions it efficiently inhibits most algae growth… coontails is a brittle dense growing floating and submerged aquatic, very effective at ‘dominating’ water quality. An Aquarium plant: Hornwort forms brittle stemmed attractive foliage to some 24" length, dense masses at the surface, or when anchored to form an upright growing habit, widely tolerant of a range of water and light conditions, bright light will keep it growing strong however As an aquarium plant hornwort forms quite attractive submerged and floating foliage, it does not form roots. A weight to anchor it down would be required to position it as required, fairly easy to arrange. Three big ‘plusses’ using hornwort for indoor aquaria ~ Fish do not find it tasty to eat… ~ Hornwort contributes to improved water clarity as it exudes natural substance toxic to algae, literally it keeps algae ‘off’ itself…. ~ Particularly useful for fish rearing purposes for egg layers and live bearing fish, coping with hard water and providing very effective hiding places for baby fish fry Hornwort as a pond plant: This is one submerged aquatic better than most at coping with fish grazing, it’s the last plant in a pond they will try to eat… Hornwort grows extremely well in shady dull corner positions of the pond where little else thrives, very effective for attracting breeding fish to lay their eggs among the dense foliage, where the fish fry’s chances of survival is quite high in a shady sheltered corner of the pond. As Winter comes, gather coontails over to the one side of the pond, coontails over winters as tiny sprigs on the bottom of the pond, these rise in Spring and if they can start in numbers early in the year they will quickly dominate the water surface area they cover, helping to contribute in the suppression of algae and blanketweed The bidder will be sent a 6"x7" priority parcel packed with as much Anacharis and Hornwort as can be fitted in. These have grown in a quiet corner of a semi shaded Carolina pond through hard freezing winters and hot Summer waters in the 80’s (°f) Please note: Among the coontails are likely to be sprigs of bladderwort, the odd water lily seedling, four leafed clover (marsilea) duckweed and possibly azolla, these plants tend to grow quite happy in the same pond niche alongside ‘coontails’ Carolina Water Shield (Cabomba Caroliniana) A dozen sprigs of ‘Carolina Water Shield’, native to Southern North America, most attractive as either a pond or aquarium plant. Try outdoors all Summer and bring some sprigs in for your aquarium over Winter! Incredibly delicate submerse foliage producing attractive surface leaves and eye catching white flowers by late Summer, ideal for ponds with tiddlers or small fish, robust and resilient enough to cope with large spawning fish about! Attractively wends its way among other foliage, very effective at masking waterlily tub positions and as a background plant in aquariums To establish this as a rooted plant, anchor two or three internodal stem sections with pebbles or gravel an inch deep at the depth you want it to establish in the pond or aquarium click here to view other items that you can combine shipping with Please note, as with all other descriptions, these plants are grown in ponds with no fish present, in waters routinely treated to ensure no nasties such as water lily crown rot are likely to turn up unexpectedly… Don’t forget to check out the swglist plantlist, with links to photo’s and descriptions of aquatic plants at webshots waterlily photo’s at photobucket… by all means let me know what aquatic plants you would like to see listed! Please note, these plants have been raised in pools with no fish present, if ever you have a doubt about putting new aquatic plants in your pond, put your new plants in a bucket of water with a spoonful or two of domestic bleach for several hours, then rinse with clean water ask before you buy! contact adavisus@aol.com for further aquatic plant cultivation tips.
